2011 Schedule of Workshops, Courses and Events

Friends of the Trees has been doing spring plant sales off and on since 1978. Over the years we have distributed over 175,000 trees, shrubs and vines in Washington, Idaho and Montana. Our offerings would make the start of a fantastic Forest Garden. We do not ship plants, so people have to pick them up in Tonasket on April 16 (or thereabouts).

January 24, 2010 Bellingham - Sunday. Squalicum Yacht Club 9:00 - 5:00. Permaculture Design Applied to Whatcom County.

Workshop and group exploration. How to make Whatcom County more food and resource self-reliant, restore fully-functioning ecosystems and become more resilient to societal perturbations. Permaculture design can be applied at any scale - to any size of property or region. Permaculture design is usually applied at the garden, homestead or farm scale. In this case we will take a look at how permaculture would approach designing at the whole Whatcom county level. This necessitates looking at things from the micro to macro level from single yard designs, to blocks, neighborhoods, small towns, the city of Bellingham, rural settled areas, farmland, forests, foothills and whole watersheds. This permaculture event will attempt to put them all into perspective. Michael Pilarski has been one of the Northwest's leading permaculture teachers since 1986. He has lived in Whatcom County off and on since 1991.

January 25, 2010 Bellingham. Evening talk. Venue to be announced. Communicating with Fairies, Nature-Spirits and Devas.

February 20-21, 2010 Spokane

Day 1. Present a short workshop on seeds at the Spokane Seed Exchange.
Day 2 Workshop: "Using Native Plants in Cities and Farmlands: a Permaculture Approach"

The workshop will focus on using native plants in urban, suburban and farm landscapes for production of food, medicines, fiber, fuel, etc as well as for ecological functions such as windbreaks, sound buffers, erosion control, shade, water retention, etc. We will explore how to bring more wild habitats and native plants into human landscapes in a way that improves the quality of life for people and native flora and fauna. A win/win situation. The role of yards, alleyways, riparian zones, farmland, etc. We will look at a range of native foods, medicinals and other useful plants which can be grown at the home scale, at the farm crop scale, for ecosystem restoration and for creating wildcrafting opportunities. We will combine species information, strategies and permaculture design.
