Hugelkultur Berm Planting 2017 with Michael "Skeeter" Pilarski

Permaculturist Michael Pilarski talks about his first year hugelkultur diversified planting near Port Townsend, Washington. He also gives a mini-tour of the garden while in the process of mulching with "hogfuel," a 50-50 mix of bark and wood chips. Filmed June 15, 2017.

Harvesting Arnica Cordifolia in Washington's North Cascades

I am an avid wildcrafter. In this new video, filmed May 23rd, 2017, I share how and when to harvest Heartleaf Arnica (Arnica cordifolia) and then I sing an ode to the Arnica.  There are several hundred thousand acreas of Arnica blooming in North Central Washington this year because of all the forest fires in 2015 and 2016. Arnica oils, creams and salves are used topically to treat sprains, bruises, and muscle pain.

University of Washington Medicinal Herb Garden
& Bastyr University Medicinal Herb Garden

On Friday, April 21, I had the pleasure to visit the University of Washington Medicinal Herb Garden. It was the warmest day of the year so far for the Puget Sound/Salish Sea. Thousands of people were out enjoying the day, but I only saw one other person looking at the medicinal plants.

Book reviews by Michael Pilarski, Friends of the Trees Society.
Prepared for the Vashon Island workshops on Growing Medicinal Plants.
April 1, 2017  version

There are a lot of resources on herb growing on the internet but less so in print.  Here are the best books I have found on the topic. They are all in my library and I consult all of them.

Herb Seed Companies in the USA and CANADA

Compiled by Michael Pilarski

Friends of the Trees Society. Version 1, March 15, 2017

Here is a list of the medicinal herb seed companies in the USA and Canada that I know of. I purchased seed from four of these companies in 2017. I like getting all of their in-print catalogs and use them as reference books.  Do you know of any other seed companies which specialize in medicinal seeds and plants. Please let me know.

Medicinal Plant List - Plants Michael Pilarski has grown and wildcrafted

3/6/2017 List

Here is a list of medicinal plants I have grown over the years.  In preparation for teaching this year’s Herb Growing Seminar on April 15, I decided to make a list of all the medicinal plants I have grown or wildcrafted. I’ve never made such a list before and was curious how many species it would add up to.

Wildcrafting Resources

by Michael Pilarski

Here is a list of Some wildcrafting resources I just put together for my March 5, 2017 Wildcrafting Workshop in Sequim, Washington. It gives you some idea of what we cover in my wildcrafting classes.

Thank you for participating. We can only scratch the surface in this 5-hour workshop.  This 10-page handout will give you additional ideas to research and experiment with.
